Science Express @ Te Papa: The Long Way Down - From prospect to mine

Thursday 5 August 2010 at 6.30pm to 8pm
Level 4 Espresso
Free entry
Mineral exploration is a high-risk, low-yield venture. In fact, only one in a thousand prospects turns into a mine. What's the process for taking a mineral prospect through to the mining proposal stage? Join Tony Christie and Michelle van Kampen as they discuss key steps in the exploration and consents process. First a mineral prospect is defined. Then, depending on positive results from each successive step, that prospect is developed into a mining proposal. Dr Tony Christie is a senior minerals geologist at GNS Science. Michelle van Kampen is a senior associate in Simpson Grierson's Local Government and Environment Group. Science Express is proudly supported by GNS Science and the Royal Society of New Zealand, Wellington Branch.

CAFÉ SCIENTIFIQUE HUTT

Hurricanes and Oil Spills
What's the USA learnt from these disasters?
Accidents happen! And recent Louisiana experience shows that some accidents mushroom into disasters. Will the gulf ever recover from hurricane Katrina and the current oil spill? What lessons have been learnt from the recent environmental disasters? Louisiana State University lecturer in ecology, Dr Brian Fry, is currently on sabbatical at GNS Science, Lower Hutt. Brian's background is in ecosystems and fates of contaminants in the environment. He studies how environmental stresses can tip ecosystems irretrievably so that they can never go back to their original state. Dr. Fry will reflect on lessons he and his Louisiana friends have learned from some recent environmental disasters.
Thursday 29 July at 6.00pm to 7.30pm
