Café Scientifique

The Café Scientifique is an informative, relaxed environment where issues in science can be discussed and debated. Each session starts with a brief presentation by a speaker.

What follows is the opportunity to quiz and debate, agree and oppose, postulate and ponder the topics raised while enjoying a coffee or two.

All welcome: join in the discussions on the issues.

Meetings are held at:

  -   Te Papa at Espresso on Level 4 on the first Thursday of the month (except Dec, Jan) at 6:30 pm.

  -   Café Reka at The New Dowse, Laings Road, Lower Hutt on the last Thursday of the month (except Dec, Jan) at 6 pm.

Science Express at Te Papa The Evolution of New Zealand Birds
Thursday 4 March 2010
Level 4 Espresso

How did New Zealand's birds get here, and are they more adaptable than we thought? Come and hear the latest research findings from scientists David Penny and Gillian Gibb. Their studies on the moa, seabirds, and song birds challenge historical theories on the evolution of New Zealand birds. David Penny and Gillian Gibb are respectively a professor and research student at the Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, Massey University, Palmerston North.
